Your skin needs some extra TLC when the weather gets HOT. We put together some skincare tips to help keep your skin looking its best during the dog days of summer.
1. Cover up. We know you’ve heard this a million times, but sunscreen is a summer skincare must! Luckily, a lot of products now have SPF included in them, so you don’t have to worry about figuring out how to contour over sunscreen when you’re heading to the office or to an outdoor lunch date. (Anyone else still trying to figure out contouring, period?)
In addition to sunscreen, don’t forget to cover up with a hat. (Now you finally have an excuse to buy that totally glamorous sun hat from Target!) Sun hats are nice for protecting your face, but they also help cover up areas you wouldn’t think about, like your ears, the back of your neck and your scalp. Some athletic wear now comes with SPF built in, so even the parts of your skin that aren’t directly exposed to the sunlight are protected.
Your peepers need protection too. I hate to be the bearer of bad news because I love fun, cheap shades more than anyone, but according to this article in Women’s Health, you should actually be wearing shades that offer UVA/UVB coverage to keep your eyes from getting sun damage.
Don’t forget to protect your lips too! The skin on your lips is super thin, so it’s really important to keep those lips sealed...with an SPF lip balm of course.

2. Hydrate. Water, water, water! Water is essential to keeping your body functioning at its best, but it’s extra important to drink more during the summer. Your skin doesn’t lie. It’ll start to look dull without enough water. H2-Oh-no!
Make it easy on yourself and get a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. Also be sure to eat foods with high water content, such as watermelon or cucumber, to get some extra H2O. We love these fun flavored water recipes for upping our water intake. Pass the cherry lime, please!
Be mindful of how much caffeine and alcohol you’re drinking. If you are going to enjoy an adult beverage or three, make sure to have a glass of water in between each one to stay hydrated.
3. Moisturize. When it gets hot and humid, it’s tempting to want to skip your moisturizer, but your skin still needs the moisture. Consider swapping your heavy-duty, thick winter moisturizer for a lightweight version.
Toner is also like a cool drink of water for dried out skin. Check the label because some types of alcohol can really dry out your skin. (And we don’t just mean the beverage variety).
We also love the idea of making moisturizing masks at home. Check out these face masks you can make out of food!
